Adam Lambert might have finished as runner-up on "American Idol" this past season, but the Idols Live tour, which took place Wednesday at a packed Allstate Arena, belonged almost solely to the 27-year-old California native.
Lambert entered the arena to the strains of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love," drawing some of the night's loudest cheers as he slithered around his microphone stand like a particularly seductive cobra. Decked out in fingerless black gloves, a knee-length, faux-lizard jacket (complete with shoulder spikes) and tight leather pants, Lambert looked like a cross between David Bowie in "Labyrinth" and a grungy extra from John Carpenter's "Escape From New York." Despite his obvious celebrity, the singer appeared most comfortable portraying the outsider; songs touched on venturing alone into the cosmos ("Starlight," "Life On Mars") and feeling out of place right here on Earth (an eerie "Mad World").
Kris Allen and Adam Lambert competed head-to-head during American Idol's eighth-season finale, however their debut albums apparently won't do the same.
Lambert announced in a Wednesday morning Twitter post that his post-Idol debut album will drop November 24 -- a week after Allen's first effort is released on November 17.
Both signed a recording contract with 19 Recordings/RCA Records a few weeks after Allen defeated Lambert to take home Idol's eighth-season title.
Adam Lambert has given his fans a really good reason to fight as they compete to raise the largest amount of money for the charity he has partered with, DonorsChoose.org.
In an interview with People, Adam Lambert talked about his very enthusiastic fans saying, "They get really competitive with each other,” adding, “I’m glad that we gave them something to fight over.”
It all started after he began receiving lots of gifts from fans after the American Idol finale, he explains: “I started getting gifts like crazy and people really starting to spend a lot of money on things for me.” Lambert adds, “I don’t need them to spend money on me. I’d rather they spend money on people in need, so I thought I would redirect that energy.”
There's no rest for the signed on the American Idols Live! tour -- just ask runner-up Adam Lambert and fourth-place finisher Allison Iraheta, who are using any down time on the road to continue working on their debut albums, which are both due in November.
Lambert tells Billboard.com that his set is "about midway" to being finished. "We recorded a bunch of stuff before the tour started, and I wrote a handful of stuff," he reports. "We have three or four weeks after the tour ends that I have to record like crazy, but we have a lot of material to do that with."
They went head to head on “American Idol.”
Now it seems likely that this year’s top two “A.I.” winners - Adam Lambert and Kris Allen - will go mano-a-mano on the charts as well.
Lambert’s record company had already announced the date of his debut album as Nov. 17th. But they had yet to trumpet a release date for the show’s actual winner, Allen.
According to MTV.News, however, it looks like Allen’s CD will come out the very same day. They’re citing a pre-order post on Amazon.com which pegs Allen’s disc as coming Nov. 17th.
Regardless of the date of Allen’s CD, some hints of its contents have been announced. The disc features performances by Fray guitarist Joe King, as well as hip-hop producer Salaam Remi, along with writing credits for Toby Gad (who produced hits for Beyonce and penned songs for Fergie), plus Lindy Robbins, who has worked with The Backstreet Boys.
Allen recently told Entertainment Weekly that the album “will definitely have that pop rock thing.”

Adam Lambert records a video message to help support high-need public school classrooms on DonorsChoose.org.
“My fans have been so amazing in their support that I would love for them to contribute to something I believe in,” the 27-year-old American Idol vet said. “Every kid deserves a great education and access to the materials and experiences that make it possible. I’m so thrilled to team up with DonorsChoose.org and encourage my fans to support arts and music projects in classrooms.”
